It's a Glorious Day

Today marks the day I've been waiting for three years to experience.  The iPhone is officially at Verizon.  I know that may sound trivial, but I can be that shallow.  I love all things Apple.  If I didn't have the past experience with AT&T that I do, I probably would've made the switch when the iPhone first came out.  My sister has one.  I've gotten to use it only a couple times because I actually drool on it when I use it.  I love the thing.

Unfortunately I'm not due for an upgrade for a bit, so I'm having to hold off on my dream of having one for a short time.  Not that I'm complaining.  It is in my future and all the bugs can be worked out on the new network.  Then you'll probably see posts from me on here that I'll be writing on my iPhone.  My stomach just did a little dance of excitement.  I know some of you think I'm taking my love to a weird level, but I'm sorry, if loving the iPhone is so wrong, I don't want to be right.

I was listening to Air1 this morning and they were talking about all the people outside Verizon, waiting for the iPhone since Verizon put a hold on pre-orders.  They were amazed that people would wait in line, in the rain, for a phone.  Obviously they don't understand all the awesome that is the iPhone.  They wanted to know, what would you wait in line for.  I thought I would answer that question here.  I'm going to come out and say Jesus won't be on the list.  That's a gimme and He's supposed to come like a thief in the night, so a line really isn't appropriate!

Here's my Top 7, Letterman style:

7) Black Friday sales - Every year I stand in line for some kind of sale.  Usually it's at 4:00 am with my sister, mom and aunt.  Last year it was around 10:00 am with my aunts and uncle in Texas where it was sunny, warm and we were outside.  It's nice to bring a new generation into the mix!

6) Tickets to any Beatles concert - Granted this wouldn't have happened in my lifetime because The Beatles broke up before I was born and John Lennon was killed when I was 3.  However, as Cher said it best, if I could turn back time, I so would've been in line anywhere they were playing.

5) Dinner at Club 33 - I used to work with a gentleman who loved Disney.  He takes trips down there several times a year.  Last year he had the awesome privilege of having dinner at the super secret restuarant in Disneyland, Club 33.  It's a high scale, gourmet restaurant hidden in New Orleans, I believe.  It's a member's only club that was originally created to woo investors.  33 of them to be exact.  Now, the member list is full and you have to know someone who is a member to even get in.  There are many famous people on that member list, but many of them still remain a mystery since that's part of this club's charm.

4) Pam Clarke - Many of you have no idea who she is, but in the world of quilting, she's kinda famous!  She's an incredible quilter.  If she was having a day where she would quilt something that I made for free and all I had to do was stand in line, I would be camping out!

3) John Travolta - I actually did wait in line to meet him and it was worth every, painful second in those heels.  His sister Ellen is a director of the arts in Couer d'Alene, Idaho.  She hosted a fundraiser where all the Travolta clan would be there.  I had to take a large boat across a lake and then wait in line for at least 60 minutes just to shake his hand.  I bought new heels just for the event.   I thought I would say something like, "tell me about it stud" or "fine, ferget it" and be all dramatic and yet show my love of his movies.  All I could muster was, "hi" and smile.  Totally star-struck.  The picture made for a great Christmas card since my name is Kelly and so is his wife.

2) Sandy Gervais, Kate Spain, Nancy Halvorsen - All these ladies design fabrics and quilt patterns.  They are among my favorites.  I would wait in line to meet any of them.  They are amazing!

1) A Mediterranean cruise - if it was a first come, first served cruise around the Mediterranean (and legit), I'd be in that line for months if I had to.

Happy Verizon iPhone day.  What would you wait in line for?

We Like Totally Hosted a Murder

This weekend we hosted a murder mystery party at our house...a la 1980!  Five other couples came over to figure out who murdered Principal Ed Rooney in the boys bathroom during the school dance.  It was a time of fun, laughter and big hair.

From left to right:

Ferris Bueller (Steve), Sloane Peterson (Jorene), John Bender (Jamie), Jeanie Bueller (Amanda), Andrew Clark (Pete), Allison Reynolds (Lindi), Duckie Dale (N), Fab 80's narrator (moi), Steff from Pretty in Pink (Stacy), Benny Hanson (Melissa), Jake Ryan (Jim) and Samantha Baker (Julie).

The best part of the mystery was the costumes.  Jorene actually spray painted shoes white so Ferris could be authentic and she sewed fringe onto her coat for an authentic Sloane.  Jim came as Jake Ryan and actually had some polka dot panties in his pocket that he got back from the dork for Samantha.  Melissa got her hair feathered and about 3 sizes bigger than normal just for the event.  Jamie came dressed as he usually does and accused me of thinking he looked like a criminal!

We laughed, we accused and we reinacted the scene with the candles on the table in Sixteen Candles!

Thank you for being willing suspects in a murder.  Duckie and I had like a total blast with each of you.  You brought this party to life in a bigger way than I had hoped as I wrote it.

Get ready for the next one!

Proud as a Peacock

As a mom there were times when I would be in the NICU with Zoe, holding her, rocking her and thinking of what she'd be like when she was 6 months old.  Then 2 years old.   Then 10 years old.  What would her hobbies be?  Would she be optimistic or pessimistic?  Would we share common interest?  All those things ran through my mind.

It is a bit different as a step-parent.  I came into D's life when she was 4 and E's life when she was 2.  They had gone through the teething, learning to eat solid foods and they were already potty trained and sleeping through the night.  It was glorious!

My role with them is more backseat.  I'm not a primary parent, yet I love them the same as though I was.  I'm not the one that took them to their first day of school or who takes care of them when they're sick.  Our bond has taken longer to build simply because of my role in their life.

I will tell you, after 6 1/2 years of being in their lives and being able to love on them, the bond is there.  It's a blessing that I can't quite articulate into words.  They love and accept me as a mom in their lives.  It is an honor to say the least.

I've watched them grow from toddlers into children and now, D is becoming quite the young lady.  Yesterday she had her second assembly.  She got to play a ladybug in a skit.  Over the last 6 months or so, I've seen a change in her.  She's growing up and becoming teen rather than child.  It's gone rather smoothly for the most part.  She's become more responsible, more compassionate, more confident without an attitude.  I can't say enough things about how amazing she is or how proud of her I am.

It took me by surprise yesterday when the tears started to flow as I watched her perform her skit in front of the entire school.  She was breath-taking.  I was mesmerized by her.  I still saw the 4 year old I first met all those years ago, but I also saw this new young lady.  She was everything I have been praying she will become.  I couldn't describe the feeling except that I was one proud mamma.

D has always had a leadership quality to her and she's always been a compassionate girl.  This year, now that's she's on Cabinet, I'm seeing it blossom in a way that can only come through the opportunities she's been given.  I'm so proud to be in her life.  So proud that she allows me to be a "mom" to her.  My heart runs over.

Wordless Wednesday...Almost

Zoe really wanted to sew with me.  We decided to have her use fabric markers, draw some pictures on muslin and then make pillows.  I love bonding with my girl.  We have so much fun together.

The Written Word

For months Zoe has been spelling out words and asking what they spell.  She is dying to know how to read and write.  I'd like to think she's got a bright future as the next Jane Austen or something.

When we went to Texas in November, I bought her a new DVD called Meet the Sight Words 1.  It was a DVD that helped children learn words that either don't follow phonics and/or they are common and you should know them by sight.  It included words like "it," "and," "the" and "play."  There are probably 20 or so words on the DVD.

Each word does something.  For the word "and" it's written on a lizard who is trying to catch a fly.  After the video goes through all the words, it has a review and then teaches children how to pick the words out of a sentence.

About a week after we got back, Zoe was reading her Veggie Tales Bible (probably her favorite book) and turned to Song of Solomon.  She got all excited and said, "mom!  There's the word "of" in this book!"

Shortly before her birthday I found out there are Easy Reader books that go along with the DVD's.  I got her the books to go along with the 1st DVD and I also got her the other DVD's as well (there are a total of 3).

A couple nights ago we sat down, opened the book "Play It" and she read the entire thing to me.

She got so excited that she could read that she wanted to read another one.  She read that one to me too.

Every night we've been watching the new DVD's and learning the new words.  She can't wait to read those books too.

If you have a child who is wanting to read, I cannot promote these enough.  They are cute videos that teach the words in a fun way.  The books match the movies and are just as cute.  Plus you get to have story time with your very active child.  Sometimes having just 5 minutes to sit while they read you a story is priceless.

Pretty soon she's going to know that P-E-T-C-O spells pet store rather than dog food store.

We Celebrated and Saved The Day

I'm happy to report we are on the mend.  It's a good thing too because we had some major celebrating to do.  It isn't every day that a girl turns 4!

Yesterday we had Zoe's birthday party with 23 of her little friends.  This year's theme was a superhero party.  They diffused bombs (23 black balloons) to save the city.  They colored emblems on their capes.  They found all the kryptonite (rocks painted green with glitter) so Super Dad could get his strength back.  They ate hero sandwiches and cake.

It was a Super day.

The best part was that Zoe felt totally loved and I didn't have a major coughing spell until the party was over.  Can I get an amen?  Anyone?

There Have Been 4 of Many Things This Week

This is the week of 4's.  Yesterday, the bad mommy blogger that I am, didn't even turn on the computer to write a post dedicated to my Zoe.  She turned 4 yesterday.  There's many things she wants to do now that she's 4:

1) Read all by herself
2) Put herself to sleep (she likes me to lay with her for a bit at night)
3) Eat broccoli (although, she's not sure, this may happen when she's 48 instead)
4) Get a bounce house and big trampoline that she can play on in the backyard.

There's also been hints of wanting a puppy.  She typically spells out words now and then asks, "what does that spell?"  It never fails, she spells out things like:

P-E-T-C-O
P-E-T-S-M-A-R-T

I don't know how those two stores in particular speak to her, but every time we're in the car, she finds one of those, asks what P-E-T-C-O spells and then gets all excited because we.could.go.there.NOW.and.get.a.puppy.to.take.home.and.love.and.play.with.mommypleeease!

She had a great day at school yesterday and took brownies for all her classmates.  What she really wanted was a surprise party, where she walks into a dark room, all her friends are hiding, then they turn on the lights and yell "SURPRISE" and she gets all excited because it's a surprise party just for her.  If you can't already tell, age 4 has brought a wealth of new imagination and ideas!

Last night, N, D, E, Grandma Lily and I waited at McDonald's for Zoe and Grandma Kathy to show up.  When they walked through the door, we all yelled "SURPRISE!"  The look on her face was absolutely priceless.  She said that was her favorite part of her day.

In addition to all the celebrations, other things have been happening in 4's this week.  Here they are in random order:

1)  4 sick days off work.
2)  4 visits to the doctor.
3)  4 decibels is about as high as my voice can go right now, if I'm lucky.
4)  4 cough drops per hour is the going rate right now.

This past weekend Zoe and I got sick.  She has bilateral ear infections and has to take medication 4 times per day.  If you don't know, getting Zoe to take "the pink medicine" is similar to trying to make a frog stay in a hot pan.  I'm sure the neighbors think we are severely hurting our child and some may even think we are torturing her.  There's much gagging, bribing and sweating that goes into the 4 times a day ritual.  We're only day 4 of 10 on this routine.

I came down with strep.  However, that has quickly turned into something that is bigger than a sore throat.  It involves coughing, lots of coughing and shortness of breath.  It has also caused me to lose my voice.  Which N is counting as a small blessing of the illness.  It did make it hard to yell "SURPRISE" for Zoe's surprise, but fortunately I can fake it and get real excited, wave my arms and generally look like I'm actually talking.  When we tried to sing Happy Birthday to her, N said I sounded like William Hung (that really horrible singer who somehow put out a CD).  I couldn't even deny it.  I totally sound like that guy.

A friend of ours said I sounded like a man.  I've gone well past that sexy Kathleen Turner voice to a tone-deaf singer.  Awesome!
Today I'm headed back to the doctor for the official appointment #4 to see if we can get me better.  I only have 4 days before Zoe's big birthday party and I must be better by then.  It's all about being a super hero and, if I don't have my voice back by then, I'll get to be Super Mime and that's not nearly as cool as Super Mom!
